His worried family feared the worst. But great-grandad Eddie, nicknamed Eagle by his carers after the 1980s ski jumper because of his determination, fought back.
He has now been discharged from Wigan Royal Infirmary and cannot wait for Friday when the nation marks the 75th anniversary of victory in Europe.
Eddie, who was an army medic during national service in the 1950s, said: “I’ll never forget those who made sacrifices for our freedom.”
His granddaughter, Stef Hall, 37, said she feared she would not be with Eddie during his final moments.
But she added: “We should have learned by now not to underestimate him.”
