Ian Wright has urged Arsenal manager Unai Emery to recruit veteran Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi in the summer transfer window.

The 35-year-old is a free agent after AS Roma didn’t extend their captain’s current contract following the conclusion of the 2018-19 Serie A season.

De Rossi established himself as one of Europe’s top defensive midfielders during his 18 years at his boyhood club in the Italian capital.

The AS Roma talisman scored one goal and made three assists in 16 games in Serie A last term as the Rome outfit missed out on a top-four finish.

Former Arsenal striker Wright believes the Gunners should bring the former Italy international to the Emirates Stadium in the summer transfer window to provide experience to the club’s younger midfielders.

“Arsenal need to bring in De Rossi from Roma,” Wright posted on Twitter.

“We’ll get 15 games out of him, it won’t cost hardly any money, and the experience he could pass on to the likes of [Joe] Willock and the other youngsters could be invaluable and money well spent.”

Arsenal signed Juventus defender Stephan Lichtsteiner in the 2018 summer transfer window following Emery’s appointment as Arsene Wenger’s replacement.

However, the Swiss defender had a minimal impact on the Arsenal team throughout the 2018-19 campaign despite his wealth of experience.

De Rossi scored 63 goals in 616 games for AS Roma over the past 17 years at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Italian star won the Coppa Italia twice and the Italian Super Cup during his time at his boyhood club. De Rossi never got his hands on the Serie A title.
