Liverpool FC could surprise Europe by pulling off a deal to sign Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt this summer, according to Sky Sports pundit Darren Bent.
The Netherlands international has been linked with a host of top European clubs so far this summer, including FC Barcelona, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.
Liverpool FC have also been touted as a potential destination for the teenager given that his Netherlands defensive partner Virgil van Dijk is already established as a key member of the Anfield team.
Former Tottenham striker Bent believes Liverpool FC could sign De Ligt in the summer ahead of FC Barcelona and PSG.
“They may go out and surprise everybody and go and get De Ligt, Virgil’s Dutch team-mate,” Bent told Sky Sports News.
“If they can manage to pull that one off and those two can play together, that would be brilliant.”
Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will be eager to improve his Liverpool FC squad this summer ahead of a potential Premier League title challenge again next term.
However, England international Joe Gomez acquitted himself well alongside Van Dijk before he suffered a serious injury in a 3-1 win against Burnley at Turf Moor in November.
Joel Matip filled Gomez’s void and impressed as he started Liverpool FC’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in Madrid earlier this month.
Dejan Lovren has been linked with a move to AC Milan, which could create space for De Ligt in Liverpool FC’s squad.
