RICKY Gervais has revealed the original name for After Life as well as the extent of Tony’s losses in season of the Netflix smash hit.
The 58-year-old returns as widower Tony in the new series, which premieres on Friday on the streaming service.
The first series was a huge hit for Ricky and Netflix, and speaking about the show, Ricky revealed it did originally have another title.
He told The Sun Online: “If I’d called it My Dead Wife, we’d have known it was a more traditional sitcom.
“In fact, the original title, when it was going to be slightly more comedic, was Roll on Death.
“And I thought that title was too much of a downer, so I think After Life was more neutral then I started thinking that it’s a lovely play on words as he’s an atheist and the after life is after his life, he thinks after his life is over, he thinks his life is over.
“But the working title was Roll on Death because it was about a misanthrope who went around being rude, but that’s when you build layers and make it more dramatic and you get braver.”
Season two sees Tony continue to struggle with the loss of his wife Lisa, and Ricky wanted people to really see what they were like as a couple with the aid of old home videos.
He said: “The big reason for Lisa in the first series was what started it all, why he’s like this and why he gained a certain amount of sympathy from the audience for why he was behaving badly.
“But now, you really see what he lost and we found that the happier the flashbacks were, the sadder it was.
“The more perfect their relationship, and goofy and drunk, it was real love, we were very conscious we didn’t want this to be a 1980s coffee advert or an advert for Roses, it had to be real, they had to be soul mates.
“So that’s why they’re always screwing around and doing stupid things and getting drunk.

“There’s a line in this one that sums it up where Tony says ‘People think that if I just did all those same things I used to do with Lisa, that I’d feel better, but I don’t miss doing things with Lisa, I miss doing nothing with Lisa’.
“And I think that absolutely sums up his existence, that just her being alive was enough and her being dead is not good, he can’t get over it.
“The world isn’t as good and he feels cheated and he’s angry and depressed and he wants compensation.”
After Life season two premieres on Netflix on Friday, April 24.
