Charlie Nicholas admits he wouldn’t be surprised if Manchester United appointed Zinedine Zidane after the international break.

The Red Devils are in crisis mode following a disappointing start to Jose Mourinho’s third season in charge at Old Trafford.

Manchester United played out an underwhelming goalless draw with La Liga side Valencia in their second Champions League group stage fixture on Tuesday night.

The 20-time English champions lost 3-1 to West Ham United at the London Stadium last weekend to leave the Red Devils in tenth place in the Premier League table.

Mourinho’s side have only managed to win four of their opening 10 games in all competitions this season following losses to Brighton, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham.

The Portuguese head coach has fallen out with his club record signing Paul Pogba in the opening months of the campaign to fuel talk of dressing room discontent.

Zidane stood down as Real Madrid manager in the summer after the France legend led los Blancos to three Champions League titles, La Liga and Copa del Rey.

Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas wouldn’t be surprised to see Zidane in charge of Manchester United after the international break.

“Well it’s a really tame, poor performance that lacked any real desire,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“Defensively they were OK, but this was another poor, boring, and dull Manchester United performance.

“Of course, all the pressure is going to come on the manager. There will be a bit that will get to [Alexis] Sanchez’s door because he was taken off again, and [Paul] Pogba’s door, but these players can go home tonight, they can turn up tomorrow and they’ll get on with it.

“The questions will be asked, and it’ll be Jose who’s going to have to face the music.

“It’s running down, I didn’t expect him to finish this season but I didn’t see it ending like this. I don’t see this lasting.

“I think we might come back from the international break and if Jose is in the pain that he looks in, I think there’ll be a deal done. Everyone is ringing this Zidane bell at the moment. It’s going to get louder this week.”

Manchester United are nine points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City and their bitter rivals Liverpool FC at the top of the table.

While a title challenge looks unlikely, the Red Devils are also facing a tough battle to finish in the top four to secure a Champions League spot.

Indeed, the 20-time English champions are five points behind Tottenham Hotspur in fourth place in the Premier League table.

Zidane worked as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant manager in 2013-14 before the World Cup winner replaced Rafael Benitez in January 2016.

The 46-year-old led Real Madrid to the Champions League glory in 2016 as he became the seventh man to win the European Cup as a player and a coach.

Zidane became the first manager to retain the Champions League title after a 4-1 win over Juventus at the Millennium Stadium in 2017.

Real Madrid beat Liverpool FC 3-1 to win their third successive European crown in Kiev back in May before Zidane stood down as manager.
