Jurgen Klopp’s fearless attitude is the key to Liverpool FC’s success against Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, according to Martin Keown.
The Merseyside outfit have won three of their last four games against the Citizens in all competitions, including a one-sided victory over Guardiola’s side in the Champions League quarter-final.
Liverpool FC lost 5-0 to Manchester City at The Etihad at the start of September in 2017 following Sadio Mane’s sending off in the opening half.
The Merseyside outfit exacted their revenge in the reverse fixture with a thrilling 4-3 win against the champions elect at Anfield to end their unbeaten start to the season.
Liverpool FC backed up that performance with a commanding 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Klopp’s men progressed to the last four despite Gabriel Jesus’ early goal after Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino overturned the deficit.
Former Arsenal defender Keown has pinpointed why Klopp has such a good record against Guardiola during his time at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool FC.
Asked why Klopp is so successful against Pep during his Ask Keown column with the Daily Mail on Thursay, Keown replied: ” It’s because he is fearless. He always sets up his teams to win.
“If you sit off Guardiola’s teams, you simply invite them on. By going after them, you can exploit any space they leave when they bomb forwards.
“Liverpool may have lost momentum after defeats by Chelsea in the League Cup and Napoli in Europe.
“But they have won their last three matches against Manchester City and are unbeaten against them at Anfield since 2003. This game will hold no fear for Liverpool.”
Klopp’s Dortmund side eased to a 4-2 win over Bayern Munich in the German Cup in August 2013.
Both Bayern and Dortmund swapped 3-0 home victories in their Bundesliga meetings in his first season in German top flight.
Klopp got his hands on the German Cup for the second successive season but Guardiola was dominant in the league, notching up a 2-1 win at the Allianz Arena and a 1-0 win at Signal Iduna Park.
Their first meeting in the Premier League saw Liverpool FC ease to a 1-0 win over Manchester City on New Year’s Eve, before the duo settled for a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture.
Manchester City were resounding 5-0 winners against Liverpool FC in their first meeting of the 2017-18 season after Sadio Mane was sent off.
However, Liverpool FC responded with three successive victories – a 4-3 league win at Anfield following by a 3-0 victory in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final before a 2-1 triumph in the return leg at The Etihad.
