Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes that Arsenal are set to finish sixth in the Premier League table once again this season.
New boss Unai Emery has endured a baptism of fire since succeeding Arsene Wenger in the hot seat at the Emirates, losing the opening two games of the season against Manchester City and Chelsea.
However, wins against West Ham and Cardiff City have quickly lifted the mood at the club, with many supporters believing that Emery has the team heading in the right direction with his passing philosophy.
In spite of that, former Arsenal FC midfielder Merson does not think that his old employers will finish in the top four.
He told Sky Sports: “I looked at Arsenal at being sixth in the league this season if I’m being honest. He’s a good manager, like Arsene Wenger was, but it is going to take time.
“He wants to play a squeezing game and he hasn’t got players to do that at the moment. So as this year goes on and the next year comes along, I think there will be improvement. To think it was going to change that quickly would have been mad.”
The international break may have stalled Arsenal’s momentum somewhat and they certainly need to improve defensively after conceding 8 goals already in the league.
That being said, there are plenty of positives to take from their start to the season too and if their potent strike force can continue firing on all cylinders, Merson might be forced to eat his words next May.
