Mark Lawrenson believes Tottenham Hotspur will ease to a resounding win against Cardiff City at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs have made a solid start to the Premier League following a return of 15 points from their opening seven fixtures so far.

Tottenham will start the weekend in fourth place in the table and four points behind behind leaders Manchester City and Liverpool FC.

The Lilywhites lost 4-2 to La Liga champions FC Barcelona in their second Champions League group-stage fixture at Wembley on Wednesday night.

Lionel Messi produced an influential performance to seal a win for the Spanish side and leave Tottenham without a point following their 2-1 loss at Inter Milan last month.

However, Cardiff City’s visit to Wembley will provide Mauricio Pochettino’s side with the chance to rebuild morale following their Champions League disappointment.

The Welsh side are without a win in their opening seven Premier League games following their promotion under Neil Warnock last term.

The Bluebirds have only managed to score four goals in the English top flight to underline their lack of a goal-scoring threat.

Former Liverpool FC defender Lawrenson is backing Tottenham to secure a 3-0 win over Cardiff at Wembley on Saturday afternoon.

“This is going to be a very different test for Tottenham after their defeat by Barcelona in midweek,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.

“Spurs just have to look at that Barca game in isolation, and forget about it, because it will have no bearing on this game.

“Cardiff will try to close Tottenham down and stop them playing but it is going to be difficult for them at Wembley.

“The Bluebirds are in a similar situation to Huddersfield in that they are down at the bottom of the table and do not appear to have the personnel to do much about it.”

Spurs have the chance to set a new record if the Lilywhites beat Cardiff to secure 18 points from their opening eight Premier League games for the first time.

Tottenham are unbeaten in their last seven games against the Welsh side in all competitions to further dampen Cardiff’s hopes of a potential upset this weekend.

However, the visitors can take encouragement from the fact that Spurs have failed to win their last three home games in all competitions.

Liverpool FC were 2-1 winners against Spurs in their last Premier League fixture at Wembley last month before Watford beat Tottenham on penalties in the Carabao Cup third round.

The north London side fell foul of a special Messi performance mid-week as FC Barcelona were 4-2 winners against Pochettino’s men at Wembley.

Tottenham are in fourth place in the Premier League table and ahead of Arsenal by virtue of their superior goal difference.
