A MAN was found walking the streets with a severed head in a plastic bag that he cut off as part of a bizarre ritual to ward off evil spirits, a court has reportedly been told.

Emmanuel Anesu Matsika is alleged to have carried out the gruesome act after visiting a witch doctor, who told him he needed to kill someone to ward off evil spirits.

He has now appeared before magistrate Rumbidzayi Mugwagwa in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, and has been indicted for trial at the High Court on June 8, Bulawayo24 reports.

According to court records local media claims to have seen, sometime in 2018, Matsika approached a witch doctor called Boss Maki seeking spiritual intervention to solve his personal problems.

The court was reportedly told Boss Maki apparently then told Matsika that his troubles were a result of evil spirits emanating from the underworld.

He was supposed to kill somebody to overcome the demons and become the devil himself, the witch doctor said, local media reports claim.

The prosecution reportedly allege Matsika was told to decapitate a human being and keep the head on him all the time until it developed maggots as this would silence the avenging spirit of the deceased person.

According to local media, he was also allegedly instructed not to wipe the weapon used in the murder until the deceased person’s spirit had been calmed.

Three weeks later in a drunken stupor to pluck up the courage, the court reportedly heard claims that Matsika picked a victim at random and carried out the appalling murder.

At the time of his arrest in 2018, Zimbabwean paper News Day reported he cut off victim David Arendi’s head in a disused toilet.

In his latest appearance, the court heard Matsika later decided to steal from people using the severed head to frighten them.

On December 22, he boarded a taxi with the decomposing head and pretended that he was going to pick up something in Belvedere, Harare, Bulawayo24 reports.

Along the way, the court heard, Matsika scared the taxi driver with the head and seized his car before fleeing.

He was involved in an accident and was apprehended by members of the public who discovered the human head after which was then arrested for murder.

During his court appearance it was reported that he said he would be representing himself at his trial.
