Manchester United are close to agreeing a contract extension with Juan Mata to keep him at the club beyond the summer, according to reports in the British media.
The Daily Mirror is reporting that the Red Devils are edging closer to sealing a deal to keep Mata at the Old Trafford outfit ahead of the expiration of his current contract.
The 31-year-old’s current deal is set to expire in two weeks’ time, but it seems that the Red Devils are keen to keep hold of the playmaker beyond this summer.
It is claimed in the same story that talks between the two parties are “ongoing” but it says that there is “90 per cent” confidence that a deal can be agreed that suits everyone.
The same story says that Mata, who is believed to earn around £140,000 a week, wanted a significant hike in salary to stay at Old Trafford.
Both parties remained “locked” in talks, according to the same report, but a compromise could be reached in the coming days.
The Spain international scored three goals and made two assists in 22 Premier League appearances for Manchester United last season and it would seem that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees him as part of his short-term plans at Old Trafford.
