Jamie Redknapp believes Liverpool FC defender Virgil van Dijk is the favourite to win the PFA player of the year award ahead of Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling.
Van Dijk has managed to transform the Liverpool FC defence over the past 12 months since his move to the Merseyside outfit in £75m deal from Southampton in January 2018.
The Netherlands international has added composure to Jurgen Klopp’s back four alongside summer signing Alisson Becker, who swapped AS Roma for Liverpool FC in a £67m deal.
Liverpool FC have the best defensive record in the Premier League this term ahead of their title rivals Manchester City.
The Reds have kept more clean sheets than any other team in the Premier League this season, with Alisson having racked up 17 shutouts ahead of the visit of Tottenham.
Sterling, meanwhile, has netted 15 goals and has made nine assists in 28 games in the English top flight in the current campaign.
However, former Liverpool FC midfielder Redknapp believes Van Dijk is leading Sterling in the race to win the PFA player of the year award.
“Virgil van Dijk is favourite for taking Liverpool to another level but Raheem Sterling has taken his own game to another level,” Redknapp told the Daily Mail.
“You cannot rule out Sadio Mane and Sergio Aguero, either.”
Van Dijk’s team-mate Mohamed Salah won the award last season after the Egypt international scored 32 times in the Premier League.
Liverpool FC started the Premier League weekend in top spot and two points ahead of Manchester City.
