Gary Neville replies when asked if Man United need to keep Paul Pogba

Gary Neville doesn’t believe Manchester United need to keep Paul Pogba beyond the summer transfer window.

The France international has been linked with a potential exit at Old Trafford this summer following a difficult 2018-19 Premier League season under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Pogba is thought to be a target for Serie A champions Juventus and La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer transfer window as both European giants look to test Manchester United’s resolve to keep their club record signing.

The 26-year-old has been sending mixed messages to the media since the end of the Premier League campaign to fuel speculation surrounding the box-to-box midfielder’s future at Old Trafford.

If Pogba were to leave Manchester United this summer, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would only have one other world-class player left in his squad in the shape of David De Gea.

However, former Manchester United defender Neville believes the Red Devils should be ruthless when making a decision about the World Cup winner’s future.

“They don’t have to keep any player,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“Manchester United are a better team when Paul Pogba plays but if players don’t want to be at the club – that doesn’t mean Pogba, he may want to be at the club – you have to get everybody onside and aligned with where you’re going.”

Neville added: “Ultimately, that’s the first thing Ole had to do – to work out who was going to be ready for the club moving forward. I’m still unsure on many players.

“I see the speculation on Sky Sports News and online and it looks like it could be moving all the time. You’ve got to get players in before you let them go because being armed with the money makes you vulnerable.

“For United, it’s all about timing and manipulating and manoeuvring to a point where they know they’re going to get players in before letting some go. Otherwise they’ll become very easy to target in terms of people bumping the money up, which I’m sure they are already.”

Manchester United signed Pogba in an £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in 2016 after the French midfielder won four successive titles at the Turin club.

Pogba started his professional career at Manchester United before he moved to Juventus in 2012.
