His new boss is thrilled to be able to bring his former England team-mate on board, Gerrard said: “I’m delighted to be able to welcome Jermain to Rangers.
“He is an exceptionally talented striker and vastly experienced footballer who has scored goals at every club he has played for.”
The 36-year-old will stay with the Scottish Premiership club until the summer of 2020, but Bournemouth have put a caveat in place in case the English striker delivers top performances.
Eddie Howe’s side will have the option to recall Defoe in either July 2019 or January 2020.
The striker signed for Bournemouth in July 2017 and has managed 34 appearances in his second spell on the south coast.
His parent club have wished him well and tweeted the news with the caption “bag ’em up in Scotland”
Defoe is a seasoned striker who will bring plenty of experience to the high flying ‘Gers, having scored 162 Premier League goals throughout his professional career than spans two decades.
