Rio Ferdinand was quick to praise Marcus Rashford for his performance in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday evening.
The England international was named in Jose Mourinho’s starting line up ahead of in-form Anthony Martial for the clash against the relegation candidates on the south coast.
Southampton eased into a commanding 2-0 in the opening 20 minutes thanks to goals from Stuart Armstrong and Cedric Soares to leave Manchester United facing a second defeat in three outings.
However, Rashford helped Manchester United to find a way back into the game when he won possession and played a deft pass to Romelu Lukaku, who fired past Alex McCarthy.
The 21-year-old hasn’t scored a goal for Manchester United since a 2-1 win at Bournemouth at the start of November and Rashford failed to end his drought on Saturday evening.
However, the England striker managed to notch up his second assist of the game when Rashford darted to the touchline and pulled a pass back for Ander Herrera to equalise in the 38th minute.
He lasted 77 minutes before Martial replaced the Manchester-born forward but the visitors were unable to find a late winner.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand singled out Rashford for special praise after his hand in both of the Red Devils’ goals.
Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: “Get in there….. sublime from @MarcusRashford 2-2 @ManUtd”
Manchester United are in seventh place and 16 points adrift of leaders Manchester City.
