Garth Crooks has admitted that Fabinho has been a far more important addition to the Liverpool FC side than the BBC Sport pundit initially thought.
Fabinho made a slow start to his Liverpool FC career following his big-money move to the Anfield side from AS Monaco in the summer.
Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp initially used Fabinho sparingly in his team despite his undoubted quality.
However, the South American midfielder has come into his own over the past few months in his favoured midfield role.
Fabinho has scored one goal and has made four assists in 14 games in the Premier League, finding the net in a 4-0 win over Newcastle United.
Klopp was forced to use Fabinho in a centre-half role for last weekend’s trip to Brighton and the summer signing impressed alongside Virgil van Dijk in a 1-0 win.
He reverted back to a midfield role for Liverpool FC’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon to make his 12th league appearance of the season before being replaced following an injury scare.
Former Spurs forward Crooks has admitted that Fabinho’s performances have caught him by surprise.
“This player has become a far more important addition to the Liverpool set-up than I first realised,” Crooks told BBC Sport.
“The Brazilian enforcer looks better at centre-back than he does in midfield. At least that’s how it appeared against a Brighton side who made life difficult for the league leaders but struggled to really hurt them.
“When there was the slightest threat, Fabinho snuffed it out. His positioning throughout the match was quite impressive. Any more displays like that and Dejan Lovren might have to start looking for new employers.”
The Brazil international moved to Liverpool FC in a £40m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in the summer transfer window.
Fabinho was part of the AS Monaco side that won the Ligue 1 title and reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2016-17.
Liverpool FC will return to Premier League action with a home clash against Leicester City on Wednesday 30 January.
