Paul Merson believes Liverpool FC would settle for a point against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday 20 October.

Jurgen Klopp’s side signed off for the international break with a close-fought 2-1 victory over fourth-placed Leicester City at Anfield.

The Reds broke the deadlock in the 40th minute thanks to Sadio Mane’s fifth Premier League goal of the season, before James Maddison levelled for the visitors with 10 minutes to go.

Liverpool FC managed to secure three points in the fifth minute of added time after 33-year-old James Milner converted from the penalty spot following a foul on Mane.

The Merseyside outfit were handed a further boost when defending champions Manchester City lost 2-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers at The Etihad to leave Liverpool FC eight points clear at the top of the table.

Manchester United slumped to a third defeat of the season at St James’ Park after Matty Longstaff netted a second-half winner for Newcastle United in their 1-0 victory over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The Red Devils are in 12th place in the Premier League table and 15 points adrift of Liverpool FC to highlight the widening gap between the two teams.

However, Sky Sports pundit Merson believes Liverpool FC would be happy with a point at Manchester United in their next fixture on Sunday 20 October.

“Liverpool are now one win away from equalling the all-time record for consecutive Premier League wins. They’ve got Manchester United at Old Trafford and Tottenham at Anfield in the next two games as they bid to better Manchester City’s 2017 record,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“When the fixtures came out these were their hardest two games. Now, they are their easiest two games on paper. However, you know Manchester United. This will be their cup final and surely, they can’t be that bad again, can they?

“United will certainly be under pressure but so will Liverpool. When you are up at the top you must make sure you keep on winning.

“At the start of the season you are probably looking at this game and thinking a point at United is a good result. You don’t know how bad United are going to be and you have a bit of a plan along the way as to what points you expect to get. Liverpool are ahead now.

“They’ve got points where they probably thought they weren’t going to get them so a draw would be okay for Liverpool in this game.”

Liverpool FC were 3-1 winners against Manchester United at Anfield last term before a 0-0 draw in the return fixture at Old Trafford.
