Michael Owen has praised Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s expert shot selection after the Arsenal striker scored his 14th Premier League goal of the season in a 4-1 win over Fulham on New Year’s Day.
The Gabon international has made an impressive start to the Premier League season following a return of 14 goals in 21 games in his first full season in the English top flight.
Aubameyang is competing with Tottenham centre-forward Harry Kane and Liverpool FC sensation Mohamed Salah to finish as the Premier League top goal-scorer in the 2018-19 season.
The 29-year-old has scored 14 of Arsenal’s 44 goals in the Premier League this season to underline his continued importance to Unai Emery and the north London side.
Former Liverpool FC striker Owen discussed what aspects of Aubameyang’s game that he particularly enjoys watching.
“He’s a goal-scorer,” Owen told BT Sport on Saturday night. “He’s got the pace to get into certain areas.
“The big thing about goal-scorers is that you have to maximise your chances of scoring with every chance you get. You have to choose the right finish, and I think he does that as well as most.
“He goes for power when he needs to go for power and he can place it and score different types of goals. He picks the right finish every time.
“There is only Mo Salah who scored more goals in the Premier League since he signed for Arsenal. It’s a phenomenal record.”
The Gabon forward has established himself as Emery’s first-choice striker ahead of France international Alexandre Lacazette in the current Premier League campaign.
Aubameyang has scored 14 goals and has made three assists in 21 games in the Premier League this season to help Arsenal challenge for a top-four finish in Emery’s first season.
The African striker moved to Arsenal in a £58m deal from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in the 2018 January transfer window to be one of Arsene Wenger’s final signings as Gunners boss.
