Jamie Redknapp felt Granit Xhaka was fortunate to avoid a red card after the Arsenal star conceded a penalty in Sunday’s north London derby.
Xhaka provided one of the big talking points of the 2-2 stalemate in the derby when the tenacious midfielder conceded a penalty in the 39th minute at The Emirates.
The Switzerland international brought down Son Heung-min in the penalty area with a reckless challenge to leave referee Martin Akinson with a simple decision.
Tottenham striker Harry Kane made no mistake from the penalty spot with an emphatic spot-kick to extend the visitors’ lead to 2-0.
Indeed, Xhaka’s moment of madness spared the blushes of Bernd Leno after the Arsenal goalkeeper’s mistake led to Christian Eriksen’s opener.
Former Spurs midfielder Redknapp couldn’t believe Xhaka opted for such a rash challenge in the penalty area, adding that the Arsenal star could have received his marching orders.
“It wasn’t far from being a red card,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.
“He catches him that high. It was a ridiculous challenge to make anywhere on the pitch, let alone your box.”
Alexandre Lacazette netted a superb solo goal to halve the deficit before half-time.
His team-mate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levelled the derby encounter with 20 minutes to go.
Tottenham will face another London rival after the international break when Crystal Palace make the trip to north London.
Arsenal will also take part in another London derby when Unai Emery’s side travel to Watford on Sunday 15 September.
