Mesut Ozil needs to start delivering at Arsenal, according to former Gunners defender Lauren.
The 30-year-old looks set to remain at Arsenal beyond the summer transfer window due to his lavish wages proving a stumbling block for any potential suitors.
Ozil struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in the Arsenal team under Arsene Wenger’s replacement Unai Emery last term to raise questions about his future.
However, the Arsenal midfielder managed to break into Emery’s starting XI towards the end of the campaign and even started their 4-1 loss to Chelsea FC in the Europa League final in Baku.
Ozil has won the FA Cup three times at the north London side but the World Cup winner has failed to inspire Arsenal to the biggest trophies since his £42.5m move to the Gunners from Real Madrid in 2013.
The former Germany international has been regularly criticised for perceived lethargic performances on the pitch throughout his six-year Arsenal career.
Former Gunners defender Lauren has a blunt message for Ozil if the 30-year-old is set to remain at the north London side for the 2019-20 season.
“Mesut Ozil will stay at Arsenal next season but he needs to start fulfilling his potential,” Lauren told bWIN.
“Whether you are Arsenal, Real Madrid or Barcelona, you need your best players to perform on the big stage and Ozil failed to do that on multiple occasions last year.
“In the biggest games last season, the quarter-final, semi-final and final of the Europa League, Ozil was not relevant, so there is something very wrong there.
“Mesut Ozil has a lot of potential and no doubt, Emery will be working to bring that to the forefront this season.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table to miss out on a Champions League spot for the third successive campaign.
