Manchester United are interested in Lyon striker Moussa Dembele as a potential replacement for Romelu Lukaku, according to reporter Duncan Castles.
The Red Devils are bound to be linked with a host of potential signings in the summer transfer window as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to stamp his mark on the Manchester United squad ahead of the new season.
The 20-time English champions made Wales international Daniel James their first summer signing on Friday after Manchester United reached a reported £15m agreement with Championship side Swansea City.
Lukaku has struggled to replicate his prolific Everton form since his £80m move to Manchester United from the Goodison Park outfit in 2017.
The Belgium international was out of favour under Solskjaer throughout most of the second half of the 2018-19 season to raise questions about his long-term future at Old Trafford.
Daily Record reporter Castles has revealed that Manchester United are interested in a potential swoop to sign Lyon striker Dembele to give their attack a facelift ahead of the new campaign.
“Manchester United perceive him [Dembele] as a potential replacement for Romelu Lukaku,” Castles told The Transfer Window podcast.
“He ticks a box for them in the sense that he would, if he came to Manchester United, he wouldn’t expect to be a starter.
“It would be a similar situation to his move to Lyon, in that he was prepared to move there and fight his way into the team.
“So Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could continue with Marcus Rashford as his starting centre-forward and use Dembele as an alternative if he wanted more aerial strength, and then allow Lukaku to go to probably Serie A – where Antonio Conte would like to sign him if United get a proper fee for him.”
Dembele 20 goals in 45 games in all competitions in his first season at Lyon following his move to the French club from Celtic last summer.
The French talent started his professional career at Fulham before he spent three seasons at Celtic under Brendan Rodgers.
