PRIME MINISTER Boris Johnson chaired his first press briefing in a month yesterday and promised to share an extensive plan to end the lockdown next week.
Mr Johnson – who was at Carrie Symonds’ side as she gave birth to their son on Wednesday – is delaying paternity leave to help in the battle against coronavirus.
The PM said the UK is now “past the peak” of coronavirus but braced Brits for more weeks of lockdown.
Among the criteria to relax lockdown measures is limiting the number of new cases to under 1,000 a day, while Professor Chris Whitty revealed fears over a second wave, similar to Germany.
It came as the UK’s death toll reached 27,123 on Friday – an increase of 352.
But on the bright side, over one million people have now recovered from coronavirus worldwide.
The results of human vaccine trials are expected to be known by early summer – a crucial step towards ending lockdown restrictions.
On testing, Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick said he thinks the Government will hit its 100,000-a-day coronavirus testing target “or be very close”.
