CHANCELLOR Rishi Sunak is expected to extend the government’s furlough scheme until September today.
Mr Sunak is expected to cut the payments to 60 per cent of earnings, but will pledge to top up wages of laid off staff if they return to work part-time.
The Chancellor has been finalising details of tweaks to the taxpayer-funded job retention scheme, which is currently paying 6.5 million workers 80 per cent of their wages – up to£2,500 per month.
He will announce the changes in the House of Commons today.
This comes as deaths in the UK increased to 32,065 after 210 more deaths were recorded today – the lowest daily rise in six weeks.
