Robert Pires has urged Paul Pogba to stop speaking out in the media and focus on his performances for Manchester United.

The France international has been hit by a number of controversies in the opening months of the Premier League season.

Jose Mourinho stripped Pogba of the vice captaincy after the Manchester United star appeared to criticise their tactics in a 1-1 draw with promoted side Wolves last month.

According to reports in the media, the 25-year-old infuriated Mourinho again after Pogba posted on social media on the night Manchester United lost to Derby County in the Carabao Cup.

Pogba has retained his place in the Manchester United team despite his apparent fallout with Mourinho but the World Cup winner struggled to perform in a loss to West Ham and draw with Valencia.

The club record signing did play a role in Manchester United’s 3-2 comeback win over Newcastle United last weekend after Pogba created Anthony Martial’s equaliser at Old Trafford.

Former Arsenal midfielder Pires has offered Pogba some advice about how to handle his current situation at Manchester United.

“For Paul Pogba, the best is to say nothing,” Pires told Reuters, as quoted by the Daily Express.

“He’s a great player. If Man United paid a lot of money for him, it’s because he’s a good player.

“His relationship with the manager may not be so good but he’s a professional.

“It’s very important for him to be focussed on Man United, on the pitch.

“Now say nothing, play football and walk out – that’s my advice for Paul Pogba.”

Pogba has won the Europa League and the League Cup since his return to Manchester United from Serie A giants Juventus in the 2016 summer transfer window.

There can be no doubt that Mourinho rates Pogba given the Manchester United boss made the France star his fourth signing of his first summer in charge of the Red Devils.

However, the World Cup star has struggled to produce consistent performances in the Red Devils team to justify the £89m outlay on the versatile midfielder.

Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge of Manchester United when the club made the decision to allow Pogba to move to Juventus in an £800,000 deal in 2012.

Manchester United will travel to Chelsea FC in their next Premier League game on Saturday 20 October.
