AYOZE PEREZ had to be restrained by his Newcastle team-mates and coaches after blowing his top at ref Jeremy Simpson.

The Toon striker was denied a stonewall penalty in the dying moments of his side’s incredible 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest.

It was 2-1 to Forest in injury time when home keeper Luke Steele clearly wiped out Perez in the box after the Spaniard had nodded the ball.

Amazingly ref Simpson waved away the visitors’ claims for a spot-kick and booked Perez for his initial protest.

Forest then went on the attack and grabbed a crucial third goal through Gil Dias’ strike.

At full-time Spaniard Perez had to be pulled away from Simpson by two of his coaches and team-mates Mo Diame and Ki Sung-yueng as he vented his anger at Simpson.

And even Rafa Benitez needed several seconds to stop Perez landing himself in more trouble, with the FA likely to review the incident.

Benitez said: “The penalty was so obvious, we have the feeling we deserved more.

“Obviously were are disappointed we lost and the way we lost

“We conceded early and I didn’t like the beginning of the game but little by little we gained control.

“We could all see what happened in the end with the penalty. We have to be disappointed. The positive thing was the team working so hard to the end.”

Forest took the lead in the second minute when former Toon striker Daryl Murphy nodded in Sam Byram’s cross.

But Salomon Rondon smashed home in the second minute of injury time and looked to have sent the game to penalties.

Matt Cash fired in two minutes later before the drama of Perez’s penalty shout and Gil’s chip.

It was the second consecutive season that Forest have dumped Newcastle out of the competition as Aitor Karanka’s men reached the third round.
