Ex-Aston Villa striker Dean Saunders believes that Manchester United are in ‘crisis’ after a poor start to the season.

Despite being billed as one of the favourites to challenge for the title this year, Man United have succumbed to two defeats already in their opening four games of the new Premier League campaign.

Brighton outplayed Jose Mourinho’s men on August 19th to emerge as 3-2 winners on the south coast before Tottenham secured a 3-0 win at Old Trafford a week later.

However, Man United did manage to head into the international break on a high after beating Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday, which has eased the pressure on their Portuguese coach slightly.

There have been widespread reports suggesting Mourinho is on borrowed time in the hot seat at the club and according to Saunders the manager is to blame for his poor signings in the transfer market.

As per The Daily Star, he told said: “They are really (in crisis). For a club like Manchester United and I’ve said this before – they’ve spent £711m since Alex Ferguson left. Van Gaal spent £250m, Moyes spent £70m, Mourinho’s spent £311m.

“And arguably they haven’t got one player who would get in Liverpool’s team. (David) De Gea maybe, Paul Pogba maybe, but that’s not really good is it?

“And it was the other way around not so long ago where Liverpool didn’t have any players that would get in Man United’s team.”

When the players return to club duty it will be up to Mourinho to prepare them for a crunch game against Watford at Vicarage Road on September 15th, which might have supporters feeling nervous already.

Lose or draw and Man United face falling even further behind their title rivals, but picking up three points against a Watford side with a 100% record so far will be no easy feat.
